The Mumbai Crime Branch has invoked the stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the murder case of Sachin Kurmi, a Taluka functionary of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Kurmi, a prominent member of the NCP’s Byculla division, was brutally attacked on October 5 while taking a walk after dinner.
Three attackers ambushed Kurmi, stabbing him over 20 times before fleeing. Gravely injured, Kurmi was rushed to JJ Hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.
The case, initially registered at Byculla Police Station as CR No. 682/2024, has now been transferred to the Crime Branch.
The charges include sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), namely 103(1), 238, and 61(2), along with Sections 4 and 25 of the Arms Act and Sections 37 and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act. With the invocation of MCOCA, the authorities aim to address potential organised crime links in the case.
The police have arrested three suspects so far: Anand Kale, Vijay Kakade, and Praful Patkar.
According to their preliminary statements, the accused alleged that Kurmi had filed cases against them at Antop Hill and Dharavi Police Stations, causing delays in their attempts to recover dues from a contractor.
The motive appears to be rooted in financial disputes and personal vendettas, although investigators are probing broader possibilities.
Kurmi’s family has named four additional suspects, whose involvement is currently under scrutiny. The Crime Branch is actively pursuing these leads while gathering evidence to strengthen the case against the arrested individuals.
In an official statement, the Mumbai Crime Branch confirmed the application of MCOCA, highlighting its commitment to ensuring justice and combating organised criminal activity.
Officials indicated that the use of this stringent law underscores the seriousness of the offence and its wider implications.
The investigation continues as authorities delve into the circumstances surrounding the murder, piecing together the events leading up to the attack.
With the application of MCOCA, the police are intensifying efforts to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and bring all those involved to justice.
